Someone to Love [VHS] Reviews

Product Overview

Writer-director Henry Jaglom's 1987, ruminating romantic comedy Someone to Love has the historic claim to featuring Orson Welles' final screen appearance. Welles plays "Danny’s Friend" (in real life, Welles and Jaglom, both independent filmmakers, were friends), experienced counsel to Jaglom's filmmaker character, who is in an existential dilemma over the inability of social institutions (particularly marriage and family) to gracefully accommodate a contemporary emphasis on personal fulfillment. Fascinated and bewildered by the seeming paradox of modern relationships, Danny invites a number of friends, especially women, to a condemned theater, where he films them answering his questions about such topics as loneliness and happiness. As with many Jaglom films, Someone to Love is both formed and formless, often seemingly improvised within a tight narrative structure. Jaglom himself, known to be a tough director on actors, comes across as charming and earnest, while the cast is adorned with the likes of Sally Kellerman, Andrea Marcovicci, Kathryn Harrold, Ronee Blakely, and Oja Kodar. --Tom Keogh

The Stuff [VHS] Reviews

Product Overview

B movie maverick Larry Cohen always enjoyed slipping a little social commentary into his genre pictures, and the satirical sci-fi/horror comedy The Stuff is no exception. A mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Blob, The Stuff is an insidiously addictive, low-calorie dessert sensation that soon wins the hearts and minds of the nation, but mostly the minds. You see, to borrow a title from another Cohen classic, it's alive.

Michael Moriarty is an industrial spy with questionable ethics and a certain moral flexibility behind his disarming drawl. "No one is as dumb as I appear to be," he informs his newest client, a snack food CEO who wants the secret of The Stuff. Needless to say he becomes the film's hero, a smart-talking everyman battling a compromised FDA and a corporate baddie who sees dollar signs in every Stuff snarfing zombie he converts. Cohen's satirical swipes at consumerism, advertising, and the ethics of corporate profit come fast and furious, if not exactly focused, and help drive the film past his--at times--sloppy direction. Moriarty's energetic performance is hilarious, and his rag-tag crew includes Andrea Marcovicci as an advertising wunderkind (who improbably falls in love with Moriarty), Saturday Night Live alum Garrett Morris as "Famous Amos" parody "Chocolate Chip Charlie," and Paul Sorvino as a commie-hating, conspiracy-spewing militia leader.

The DVD features commentary by Larry Cohen along with trailers and detailed biographies. --Sean Axmaker

Front [VHS] Reviews

Product Overview

The Front is both a comic delight and perhaps the most graceful act of show business revenge in cinema history. Written by, directed by, and starring various talents blacklisted during the McCarthy-era witch hunts of the 1950s entertainment industry, the film stars Woody Allen as Howard, a cashier and bookie approached by blacklisted television-writer Alfred (Michael Murphy) to act as a "front," i.e., the alleged author of Alfred's works. The scam proves hugely successful. Soon Howard is fronting for several other banned writers, taking a cut from every sale to the networks, and basking in praise (and romantic attentions) for his prolific talent. It all unravels when congressional investigators dig into Howard's past for Communist ties and squeeze him to name others with supposed links to the Red Menace. The Front is charming, tragic, heroic, and briskly intelligent, featuring a heartbreaking performance by Zero Mostel and directed by Martin Ritt (Hud). --Tom Keogh

Henry Jaglom's Someone to Love Reviews

Product Overview

Henry Jaglom's moving exploration of the contemporary heart, Someone To Love is a wonderful comedy which centers around a movie director's puzzled search for romance and his attempt to find out why life hasn't worked out quite like anyone expected it to. Aiding in his quest is Orson Welles, in his last screen role, who serves as pundit, commentator and witty Greek chorus, "summing up with dazzling eloquence, the wisdom of a lifetime," says Kevin Thomas in the Los Angeles Times. "'Someone To Love' is a whole wonderful movie unto itself." The movie also features fine and funny performances by the striking actress Sally Kellerman, angst-ridden, fast-talk artist Michael Emil and the beautiful and remarkable singer Andrea Marcovicci.

Who Is Henry Jaglom [VHS] Reviews

Product Overview

The mercurial film director Henry Jaglom is examined in this documentary, which features a number of people he has worked with explaining in frequently hilarious terms why Jaglom is both a fascinating friend and an incredibly annoying person to be around. Jaglom himself appears throughout in the documentary, commenting on what others say and explaining his eccentric method of improvising movies by claiming, "I'll fit the script later to what the actors give me." Actress and singer Andrea Marcovicci relates how supportive Jaglom has been of her efforts, but at other times she seems ready to throttle him. Candice Bergen speaks insightfully about him, calling him "confrontational" and a "kamikaze intellectual." And Jaglom's own brother, filmed on a New York City subway train, states that Henry is suited to be a filmmaker as he "wants to control people." After a torrent of criticism delivered with comical aplomb, Jaglom's brother says, "I'm totally amazed he hasn't gotten beaten up." Jaglom is seen in brief clips with interviewers including Charlie Rose and Bob Costas, and a critic who calls Jaglom the "world's worst director" appears to explain why. --Robert J. McNamara
